About the line-up:
Nick Adema
Nick Adema is a Canadian trombonist (MA)/ composer currently based in Amsterdam.
Nick is a proud Rath Trombones artist. Exploring the plurality of sonic environments is Nick Adema’s forte. Using the modest nature of the slide to express his musical vigour, Nick is one of the most versatile trombonists coming out of Canada. Hailing from the nation's capital Ottawa, Nick quickly came onto the scene as a curious mind who embraced spontaneity and playfulness in his music.
Reinier Baas
Reinier Baas occupies a prominent place in the European jazz scene. He has performed as a soloist with the Metropole Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra. As a sideman he has collaborated with Gregory Porter, Dave Douglas, Hans Teeuwen and Han Bennink. He was Artist In Residence at the 2017 South Tyrol Jazz Festival, and in 2018 he was given carte blanche by the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, resulting in the premiere of String Quartet #1 . He received composition commissions from the North Sea Jazz Festival, the November Music Festival and Pynarello.
Tijs Klaassen
Tijs Klaassen picked up the double bass at the age of 19, switching from bass guitar to completely focus on the instrument he loves the most. He studied at the faculty with jazz teachers Ernst Glerum, Frans van der Hoeven, Ruud Ouwehand and classical teacher Peter Leerdam. During his exchage semester in Philadelphia he studied with David Wong at the Boyer College of Music and Dance. During his stay in the United States he took private lessons with Ron Carter, Orlando Le Fleming, Rick Rosato and Ben Street.
Magnus Austad
Born and raised on the Norwegian countryside, Magnus Austad is a drummer, composer and bandleader currently based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Playing drums since the young age of 8, Magnus has had plenty of years to try to figure it all out. After having his drumming described by a renowned Dutch drummer as “cynical and sarcastic… a higher form of communication!”, Magnus feels he has found his own voice in the 21st-century world we live in.
Active in projects ranging from progressive metal to free jazz, which at first glimpse might seem like two very different things, actually share quite a lot of aesthetic values, he tries to only participate in projects he feels he can wholeheartedly stand behind. Currently reaching an approximately 70% success rate and improving.
